Fifteen years of…words?

I got an email from WordPress yesterday, reminding me that I’ve been blogging on their platform since 2005.

That’s fifteen years of words about life, travelling, Japan, gadgets, annoyances, obsessions with notebooks and my penchant for lying on beaches around the world with no clothes on. That flew by, didn’t it?

So many hours spent pecking away at the keyboard on a series of Apple laptops.

So you’re a blogger now?

Philosophically, I don’t consider myself a ‘blogger’. It’s nothing to do with labels, more a reflection of the reality that I dip in and out of here very inconsistently.

It’s not usually a daily thing, until it is. There’s no sharp and organised thematic focus, until there is. And then I neglect the whole thing for weeks at a time. Then return with a new focus. It’s a wonder anyone reads this at all. Yet the stats say somebody does…

I’ve started, binned and restarted this blog several times over those years. I’ve attempted to be minimalist, but then blog scope-creep happened and, at one point, I was managing over seven blogs about different topics.

I’m at last down to a more manageable three – this one, my blog and one for my professional life. Though I’m well aware that’s three more than most people on the planet have.

Why do I keep returning?

It’s fun, cathartic and even educational. I’ve learnt quite a bit about the world and the other people in it by reading their blogs. And also from the comments left on my posts. It’s been an amazing window onto the world and I appreciate every response to my ill-considered nonsense here.

(Unless your message was caught by the spam filter and a poorly-masked attempt to get me involved in your Bitcoin scam).

I do wonder how long I’ll keep this going for. I’m sure once I start traveling again, I’ll have lots of photos and stories to share. But when we’re on lockdown, and life extends to the walls of my apartment, it’s a little trickier. And yet, I keep coming up with ideas. Some more interesting than others, I’ll be the first to admit!

Anyway, if you’re still with me, or if this is the first time you’ve stumbled across, thanks for reading. It means I’m not screaming into the void.

  1. Wow, that’s a long time indeed. Wishing you many more years to come, and I guess I’ll have to check out your notebook-related posts now as a fellow notebook fan 🙂
