I’m one month into using the iPhone 12 Pro as my daily phone and thought it would be timely to check in and share how it’s going.
I was tempted to get the iPhone 12 Pro Max, as I love a big screen. I’d also been using an iPhone XS Max for two years, so I just assumed I wouldn’t be downgrading in terms of screen size. But when @TheFrankFlyer got his 12 Pro, I was shocked by how much it felt like the perfect size.
One month later and I’m so glad I didn’t opt for the monster 12 Pro Max and glad I’m back to using a phone I can operate with a single hand.
Screen aside, it’s lightning fast (and the XS Max was no slouch), has a gorgeous screen, has a design that is stunning and can actually fit in my pockets. I’m a big fan, yeah.
One of the first things I bought after the phone was a case. I sported my iPhone XS Max case-free for months, in part to make it slightly smaller, but didn’t want to tempt fate with a brand new phone.
Initially, I bought Apple’s transparent plastic case, and have to admit it was one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen Apple create. I lasted with it for less than a week before getting one of Apple’s leather cases, in black. The leather case adds next to no weight or heft, meaning it’s still a one-handed phone. But seriously, avoid that transparent case. It’s tacky as hell.
I wonder if this year represents zenith of big screen expansion. At 6.7 inches, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a monster. I’m sure lots of people will like it, but the response to the iPhone Mini was incredibly interesting. People were clamouring for a smaller phone and Apple were finally making one.
I don’t think I’ll be going the Max route again. If at any point I need a larger screen to read something, then I have a choice of iPads. An interesting side-effect to buying a smaller phone is that my screen time each week has decreased. I’m less interested in staring at a phone screen for ages when it’s smaller. It’s more of a phone and (amazing) camera, less of a social media time-sink and library.
Phones as phone. What a radical departure!
