Beer appreciation: Common Grounds Coffee Porter

My sister-in-law got me a lovely case of beer for my birthday last month. It’s from ‘Beer Bods‘ and there’s quite the selection of new (to me) beers to choose from.

This was an excellent excuse to have my friend Ernesto – a fellow Beer Enthusiast – over for dinner and a tasting session. We shared several of the beers, while answering a few quick questions:

  • Does it pass the ‘sniff test’?
  • What are my initial taste reactions?
  • What food could I pair this with?
  • Would I buy it again?

One of our favourites from yesterday evening was ‘Common Grounds Coffee Porter‘ from Magic Rock Brewing.

When I’m not sipping a tasty and refreshing IPA, I love a good stout or porter. Common grounds is definitely one of the latter. On opening the can, I got a rush of coffee scent – like freshly-brewed espresso! This continued once I’d decanted the can into two glasses and washed it around a bit. A lovely start.

Initial taste reaction was: woah! Delicious. A heady mix of sweetness, bitter coffee, dark chocolate and earthiness. I described this as winter-in-a-can. The perfect porter for an evening in front of a roaring fire.

I could see myself enjoying this again with something nice and salty – like a bacon sandwich or a toasted cheese sandwich. Something very savoury, to counter the sweetness.

I’d definitely buy this again and can recommend it to anyone who prefers their beers dark and tasty.
