You know, it’s never too early to plan our annual trip to Japan. At least that’s what we were saying when we started looking for flights to Tokyo on this cold and wet January Sunday morning.
After last year’s amazing trip, it was pretty much inevitable that we’d have to come back. So we searched for flights around the same time of year and, with @FrankDJS‘s usual skill and a gazillion BA frequent flyer miles, we have a two-week trip to Japan all booked.
Well, the flights, at least.
And, due to some diligent and focused collecting of BA miles via every route known (and unknown) to humanity, we’ll be going and returning First Class. A guaranteed excellent start and end to the holiday – based on previous experience, at least.
While it’s not until September, that won’t stop me making lots of plans for where to visit. We fly in and out of Tokyo – literally my favourite place on earth – which gives us amazing opportunities to plan day-trips out of the city on the most fantastic form of public transport in the world: the Shinkansen bullet train.
Right now, I’d love to spend a couple of days back in Kyoto, but also visit Kanazawa. We dropped it from last year’s itinerary, as it was turning into a bit of a mission. Less holiday, more gruelling tour. So maybe we’ll get over there this time round.
The other key activities will obviously include:
- Geeking out: on Shinkansen trains and Akihabara in Tokyo
- Chilling out: in various onsen hot springs
- Filling out: by eating far too much, but enjoying every mouthful
I’m determined to make 2017 another epic year of travel. So far, we have two trips to Spain booked (April and June), which will include Barcelona, Sitges, Mallorca and Alicante and now Japan in September.
That leaves plenty of space across the summer for some time in the sun. And plenty of time to pull together an exciting itinerary for Japan.
Sounds like a good plan!
We will be in Tokyo next month and doing the drive around Toyama.
Tokyo is indeed fabulous! We’re sure you’d enjoy it and Kyoto too!

Fab! Hope you have a lovely time. This will be our fifth visit to Tokyo! So far, we’ve also been to Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajama and Nagano.
It’s such a beautiful country and I can’t wait to see more of it.

And if you do drive trips, it will even more fabulous!

We tend to go by train, simply because I don’t drive (epilepsy) and I don’t want to have to make @FrankDJS do all the driving. 🙂

Suan: hee, Mel does all the driving…and I work the GPS. It works fine and if the distances are not large, it should be fine! We normally take the Shinkansen to the nearest city to be based from and drive from there!

Sounds like you have a good partnership there! We split it by @FrankDJS doing the travel booking and me doing the directions once we’re on the ground – along with using my very minimal Japanese in shops, train stations and restaurants.

I think it’s my favourite travel destination. For now, anyway! There’s so much to see and do and it’s just so different to anywhere else I’ve been.
I’ll be sure to share our adventures here 😀

I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since you blogged about planning the 2016 trip; tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock… It’s great planning trips, enjoy!

I was thinking exactly the same this morning! I enjoy planning trips in January, because otherwise, it can be quite a miserable month.
This week’s travel planning has been a real shot in the arm, especially scoring those points-based seats to Japan. Mega-tough to secure most years.
I have to admit I’m quite looking forward to Sitges Pride too, though 😎

I agree with trip-planning as a way to beat the winter blues. We’ve paid Aer Lingus a few visits already this month; we’ll welcome February in Meloneras; Amsterdam and Venice are on the calendar too!

Lovely. We’ve not got Japan, two trips to Spain and a long weekend in Berlin for my birthday next month. Very excited 🙂
